PERT PREP
Get Dual Enrollment in HS & College

Understanding the PERT Test:

The PERT, or Postsecondary Education Readiness Test, is a crucial assessment tool in Florida designed to measure a student’s readiness for college-level coursework. It evaluates skills in mathematics, reading, and writing, ensuring that students have the foundational knowledge needed for higher education.

How It Works:

When a homeschooled student passes any part of the PERT test, they become eligible for college-level coursework. These courses are typically offered through dual enrollment programs in partnership with local colleges or universities. Students can earn college credit while completing their high school education.

No Cost for PERT Testing:

The PERT test is offered by many educational institutions in Florida as a tool to assess a student’s readiness for college-level coursework. One of the most remarkable aspects of the PERT test is that it is entirely free of charge. This means that regardless of your background or financial circumstances, you have access to this valuable resource to help you on your educational journey.

Who Can Take the PERT Test:

The good news is that students of all ages, including those in the home education instruction program, can take the PERT test. There’s no age restriction. All that’s required are a picture ID and a birth certificate. This flexibility opens doors for homeschooled students to explore college-level courses earlier than their peers.

Benefits of PERT Preparation:

At AEI, we recognize the importance of thorough preparation. Our PERT preparation programs are tailored to equip your students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel on the test. When students are well-prepared, they have a greater chance of passing the PERT test on their first attempt.

College Credit Opportunities:

Passing any part of the PERT test is a significant achievement. For homeschooled students in Florida, it means they may be eligible to enroll in college-level courses while still in high school. This can accelerate their educational journey and save both time and money.

PERT system scoring

You will receive a scaled score for three PERT subtests. The lowest score you can get on the PERT subtest is 50, while the highest score is 150. You do not pass or fail the PERT test. The scores obtained in each of the three subtests are used to determine your skill level in each of these areas and to place you in appropriate classes.

Scores needed for college-level classes

Individuals interested in pursuing a post-secondary education must obtain appropriate scores on the PERT exams to indicate that they are ready for college-level classes. High school students that do not get high enough grades take developmental education classes in their senior year. Colleges also offer remedial courses for those who do not have the skills to start college-level classes.

Mathematics scores:

People that score 114-122 can enroll in Intermediate Algebra, a college-level math class. Scores of 123 or more increase the number of math courses a student is eligible for. Students who score below 114 must take remedial courses or developmental education.

Reading scores:

People who do not score 106 or higher on the reading subtest may also need to take a remedial reading course or developmental education.

Writing scores:

All students who intend to take Freshman Composition Skills must obtain a score of 103 or higher on the writing test in addition to the minimum accepted score on the reading test.

Each Tests Breakdown:

SAT: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW): Includes Reading and Writing & Language sections, testing reading comprehension and language skills. Math: Assesses math skills up to advanced algebra and data analysis. ACT: English: Evaluates grammar and usage. Math: Assesses math skills up to trigonometry. Reading: Measures reading comprehension. Science: Focuses on problem-solving and data interpretation. CLT: Verbal Reasoning: Assesses reading and vocabulary. Grammar/Writing: Evaluates writing and language skills. Quantitative Reasoning: Tests mathematical abilities.

Duration of the Tests:

SAT (without essay): Approximately 3 hours. SAT (with essay): Approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes. ACT (without essay): Approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes. ACT (with essay): Approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes. CLT: Approximately 2 hours.

How They Are Used for College Entrance:

These standardized tests are used by colleges and universities to assess a student's readiness for college-level work. Key points to consider: Admission Criteria: Colleges typically consider SAT, ACT, or CLT scores alongside other factors such as high school GPA, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. Score Comparison: Some students may perform better on one test than the others, so it's essential to research the specific requirements of your chosen colleges. Test Optional Policies: Many institutions have adopted test-optional policies, allowing students to choose whether to submit SAT, ACT, or CLT scores as part of their application.
